Construction

Lunar Solo Setup Tips

Lunar Solo Set Up

Unlike traditional tents, the Lunar Solo’s canopy is designed to “float” off the ground to increase ventilation. Also, the floor is not rigidly fixed but floats. A floor under tension is more likely to rip or get punctured by sharp objects.

These facts may make the Lunar Solo seem a bit more difficult to set up for first time users. Have no fear, we've included a number of features to help you get set up correctly.

Lost your instructions? Download the pdf here.

Since your tent canopy floats, you can vary the height of your trekking pole depending upon conditions.  Higher will provide more ventilation and lower in stormy weather. The front of the tent should always be off the ground. This is to ensure that you have adequate ventilation. The optimum height of your trekking pole should be 49 inches or 124 centimeters.

Setting the stakes in the proper order is one of the key elements in getting the perfect pitch. Look at the guide layout guide below to know where and in what order to set your stakes.

HERE ARE A FEW ADDITIONAL DO’S AND DON’TS.

Do’s

          • Do extend the webbing guy-lines to their extent. Run the guy-lines all the way to the ground.
          • Do set the stakes in the order listed above. Since the canopy floats off the ground on the top of the pole, it’s important to achieve a balanced side to side and front to back.
          • Do set the height of the front pole to 49 inches.
          • Do close the vestibule before setting up the tent. This aide in getting the best alignment of the stakes.
          • Do any additional tension with the adjuster on the main guy-line, if needed.

Don’ts

          • Don’t try to raise the perimeter of the tent by using long stakes and terminating the guy-lines several inches off the ground. This is somewhat counter-intuitive to normal logic. When you set up the tent this way, instead of the canopy and sidewall rising, they will tend to collapse instead. This will cause the corners to dip, resulting in reduced headroom and ventilation.

COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS:

My bathtub floor is flat.

The canopy of the Lunar Solo floats and so does the floor. If your bathtub floor is flat, it likely has to do with your corner guy outs. Make sure the webbing guy lines on the corners are fully extended with no tension. If you need to make adjustments to tension your shelter, make them by moving your stake. Once you’ve achieved the proper tension, you can use the guy lines to make minor adjustments and re-tension the shelter should you need to after it has been pitched for a while. Another common mistake is that the shelters are pulled too far to the rear, not creating enough separation of the rear canopy from the ground and creating too much slack in the front vestibule. To correct this bring closer the rear three stakes and move further the front, the main stake. Be sure to reduce tension on the vent corners by unclipping the door or concurrently sliding the Prussik loop. The supporting pole should be at a slight angle with the tip inserted into the pole pocket at the apex.

Pitching with a trekking pole.

One of the most common mistakes we see on pitches is that people pitch their Lunar Solos with their trekking pole handle pointing up. This places the handle inside of the apex/vent area of the Lunar Solo. While the Lunar Solo can be pitched this way, it was not designed for this sort of set up and a few problems occur. When the main guy line is tensioned, a lot of extra stress gets put on the vents and seams of the apex of your shelter. It also puts stress on the vestibule zipper, potentially causing problems with closing your vestibule. To avoid this stress, pitch the Lunar Solo with the tip-up. There is a Hypalon (rubber-like material) sleeve that can be found at the apex of the shelter that the trekking pole tip goes into. Pitching tip up into the sleeve allows for a proper pitch while preventing the trekking pole tip from puncturing the canopy. We designed the Lunar Solo this way for a couple of reasons:

        • Using a sleeve allows for both trekking pole use and collapsible pole use.
        • By placing your handle down, your pole is less likely to sink into the ground if your campsite is in a location with soft or wet ground.

The Lunar Solo, with its single pole and raised canopy, creates an incredibly light and airy shelter. Unlike other tents with fixed points of setup, the floating canopy and floor design does take a little more patience to master. Still, the Lunar Solo’s weight savings make it well worth the effort.

NOTES:
  1. The weight does not include stakes or pole.
  2. Support poles and stakes are sold separately.
  3. Floor color matches shelter body color. Color may vary slightly from production run to production run.

Versatile spray that works well for sensitive skin
Lately I've been hearing so much about hypochlorus acid and its multiple benefits and uses. Being that I really like Coola products, when I saw that Coola had made a hypochlorous acid face spray, I was eager to give it a try. I'm glad I did! As someone with sensitive skin that gets irritated from perspiration when I work out, I was hoping this spray might calm my post-workout skin...and it did. The mist comes in an attractive spray bottle. The spray that comes out is at the intensity of somewhere between a fine mist and a coarse spray; it sprays a good amount to wet your face rather than just a very fine coating. Upon spraying on my skin that was red and warm from my workout, I immediately felt a cooling effect. I wiped the spray in to my skin a bit, and it both cleared away the perspiration, and felt soothing to my post-workout irritation. It felt very different from other toners or astringents I'd used, and my face felt clean, refreshed and unexpectedly soft after use. I later tried the recovery mist on a small area of rash I developed on my neck. I had a similar experience in that it cooled the skin, and my rash appeared minimized, as well. My only issue with this product is the scent. The spray has a scent that smells like a faint version of chlorine bleach...which was disconcerting, since I'm spraying it on my face! I actually looked it up and apparently that's just the scent that hypochlorous acid has...so it's not specific to just Coola's product. Fortunately, the bleachy scent dissipated quickly. Overall, I'm happy with this product, and found it useful for my irritated skin. While I tried it for post workout skin and a rash, apparently it can be used for bites, scrapes and acne as well, so it seems to be very versatile. So if you can get over the initial bleachy scent, it's definitely worth giving a try. Priced at $20 for the 3.4 ounce bottle, which should last a while, I find it to offer a good value for the money, as well.

Surprisingly Effective for Redness & Post-Sun Skin Recovery
This stuff actually works. I’ve been using it after sun exposure, and it genuinely seems to help calm, soothe, and hydrate my skin. I usually spray it on before applying my hydrating serums and moisturizer, so it’s part of a larger skincare routine, but I definitely feel like this mist plays an important role. My skin feels less irritated, looks less red, and just overall more refreshed afterward. The spray itself is lightweight and easy to use, with no sticky residue or heavy feeling on the skin. It layers well with other skincare products too, which I appreciate. Overall, this has become a really nice recovery step in my routine—especially after being outdoors or whenever my skin feels stressed and dehydrated. Sometimes skincare products make very dramatic promises and deliver absolutely nothing but scented disappointment. This one quietly does its job.

Truly refreshing right away
I am someone who gets a red face from even the most slight physical exertion, even when I'm in peak physical shape (I've been this way my entire life), so anything that reduces redness and heat is something I'll pretty much instantly try. I already use several other Coola products (their hair sunscreen is amazing) so this was interesting right away. After going on a brisk walk pushing the stroller (while pregnant by the way), I tried this spray on my face and chest. It was genuinely refreshing immediately! It didn't bother my skin, was a good amount of product in one spray, and didn't have any kind of weird smell. Honestly for $20, I would buy this repeatedly every spring/summer, especially in the Midwest! I'm considering ordering an extra bottle just for my daughter to take with her to summer camp. Pro tip: store in the fridge for even more refreshing-ness!

Amazing ability to calm red, itchy skin but pricier than alternatives
When I saw this product, I was a bit skeptical. I have extremely dry skin that’s prone to red, itchy spots but it seemed unlikely a misty spray would be anywhere near as beneficial as the creams and ointments I’ve turned to over the years. Since I’ve used other COOLA products and really liked them, I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. I tried it on a couple of red patches on my face. There’s an immediate feeling of cooling relief (which leads me to believe this would also be a great solution for a burn), but what I found amazing was the redness decreased significantly and immediately. After a few minutes, I was able to put on makeup, forgoing concealer on those spots. I also tried it on a red, itchy spot on my leg, again calming the itch and decreasing the redness. Just because it seemed unwise to start using hypochlorous acid, the active ingredient in this spray, knowing nothing about it, I did a bit of online research. Apparently, not only is it considered safe and recommended by dermatologists for eczema like conditions, it also is antibacterial and can be used to keep cuts clean and help them heal. I’m sold on the concept of this spray. My one hesitation is that it seems to be more expensive than other similar options – particularly when you do the math to determine cost per ounce. I am a real fan of the COOLA brand, but given that my skin is such that I’ll probably use this regularly, the cost differential may become prohibitive. I would highly recommend this product for anyone who wants it on hand for the occasional sunburn or blemish. For those like me who would benefit by using it once or more per day, while still singing its praises as to efficacy, I would have to qualify the recommendation due to price.
